Unbelievable in this day and age. Ms. Varjian is being represented by her daughter who is an experienced attorney. We need a HUGE show of support for this wonderful, giving person. This will set a TERRIBLE precedent for stray and feral cat feeders if she goes to jail (which is possible), probation and or STIFF fines. We cannot let this happen. If you love animals, PLEASE show your support. Go to work late, be there. The news will be there and everyone needs to see that the cats are cared about. Cats are often the forgotten ones even by animal people. And strays are really forgotten. Some of the cats were brought to the Downey pound, where statistically 99% of ferals are killed.  Fortunately, volunteers retrieved most of the impounded cats in time, and Stray Cat Alliance went into negotiations with the county. Not only did the county stop trapping, we have now entered into a historic agreement:   Stray Cat Alliance will undertake the monumental job of trapping and relocating the cats!  SCA only advocates relocating feral cats as a last resort – and this is it:  Our removing these cats is the only way to prevent their death. We negotiated with the county and SCA volunteers will trap and house the cats and the county will sterilize, vaccinate, microchip and test all the cats at their expense! Most have had all this done already. Because of people like you, we have rescued, spayed/neutered, advocated, inoculated, fostered and found homes for more cats than ever! Won't you please give us a generous, tax-deductable donation to help SCA reach even more of our goals in 2009? We can't help but comment on how much history was made this year - locally and nationwide! While much of it has been uplifting, some has been sad. Tough economic times and natural disasters have forced record numbers of animals, largely cats, into overcrowdedd local shelters, or worse, to fend for themselves on our streets or in the wilderness areas where they face extraordinary danger from predators. Despite our ongoing demands, SCA will not turn our backs on these newly homeless pets. These beautiful faces need your help   </td> <td width="75%" align="left" valign="top" background="http://www.straycatalliance.org/images/sca-watermark.jpg"><h1>Their 'help' is hurting. </h1> Dear Felines Friends: As many of you have been following, LA County Animal Control has been ordered by County Supervisor Don Knabe's office to get rid of over 100 fixed, healthy stray and feral cats living peacefully on the abandoned grounds of Rancho Los Amigos. They give ridiculous reasons like the plague and rabies, both of which the County's own veterinarian has stated basically these disease do not exist in cats in California. The country has fenced off the abandoned buildings where the cats have lived for years. They have boarded up some areas and are planning on boarding up some more. The County gives ridiculous excuses, i.e. they will leave 2 holes not boarded up for the cats to escape but the truth is we don't know if those holes are accessible to all places. Then she said she would give my message to Aaron Navarez. I said he is Animal Control and has NO power and to PLEASE pass my message to someone who works directly with Mr Knabe. She said she would try but Officer Navarez just called me back. We have to get through to people who can do something. PLEASE call and get all your friends to call too but please read the blog first.
